HumanIA The Academy for Human Capability

Our lives are decided by a set of human capabilities. Most of us were never taught a single one of them.

So we built the academy that teaches them.

Who's behind it?
The human superpowers

The capabilities that make an exceptional life possible.

Every one is a trainable ability. They build on one another, and together they open up a level of effectiveness that most people never reach.

  1. Somatic literacy

Reading the signals from inside your body and nervous system to understand what is actually happening in you — usually before your mind has words for it.

You catch what is building while you can still choose what to do about it, rather than working it out after you have already reacted.

  2. Emotional granularity

The ability to tell precisely what you are feeling, and to tell one feeling apart from another. Not “bad” — disappointed, and slightly ashamed, and protectively angry.

Disappointment, shame and anger each need something different from you. Knowing which one you are actually in is what makes the right response available.

  3. Metacognition

The ability to observe your own thoughts, emotions and behaviour as they are happening, rather than being inside them.

Seeing it is what makes choosing it possible. This is where changing how you operate becomes possible at all, and every capability above it depends on it.

  4. Ego literacy

Understanding the structure underneath your own behaviour — the fears formed early, the beliefs you built about what you are and what is possible for you, and the strategies you developed to protect yourself.

You stop managing the same problems over and over, and start changing what produces them.

  5. Self-authorship

Deciding for yourself what you value and what you stand for, rather than running standards you absorbed from family, culture or profession without ever examining them.

Your direction becomes something you actually chose — which is what makes it possible to commit to it fully.

  6. Perspective fluency

The ability to see your own way of looking at things as one way among several, and to move between them.

You stop defending a position and start working with what is actually there. It is rare, and it is why some people are trusted with the situations nobody else can hold.

  7. Presence

Something in you notices all of this happening, and is not any of it. This is the ability to rest there, rather than in whatever is going on at the time.

Nothing that happens to you has the same grip on you. Every rung below is you looking at something. This is what does the looking.

The few who build these live remarkably well. Most of us were never told they existed.

Every one of them can be trained. That is what this academy is for.

Ten more capabilities

What makes the seeing usable

  • Self-inquiry — The ability to ask yourself what is actually going on in you and get a real answer — then ask what is underneath that, and get that too. You find what is running you in seconds, rather than working it out weeks later or never at all.
  • Equanimity — The ability to stay with something difficult without being taken over by it, and to come back to yourself quickly when you are. Most people know whether they get knocked over. Almost nobody trains how fast they get back up, and that is what changes how much you can take on.
  • Response flexibility — The ability to interrupt an automatic reaction and choose a different one. This is what all the seeing is for. Without it, understanding yourself stays interesting and changes nothing.
  • Conation — The ability to turn what you intend into what you actually do. It closes the distance between the person you mean to be and the person your week actually shows.

Pointed at another person

  • Empathic accuracy — The ability to work out what another person is actually feeling, rather than assuming they feel what you would feel. You respond to the person who is really there. Imagining your way into someone's head makes people less accurate and more confident, which is the worst combination available.
  • Mentalization — The ability to keep in mind that the other person has their own mind — their own fears, reasons and history — especially when you are upset with them. This is what fails in most damaging arguments. Holding onto it means you can disagree hard without doing harm.
  • Attunement — The ability to read what another person actually needs from you, and adjust how you are showing up to meet it. People feel met rather than handled. It is ego literacy pointed outward.
  • Differentiation — The ability to stay fully yourself while staying genuinely close to someone. Closeness without disappearing into it, and separateness without going cold. Most people only ever find one of the two.
  • Repair — The ability to restore a relationship after damage — and to know that what works depends on what kind of damage it was. Always apologising is not the answer; after a breach of trust it can make things worse. Knowing the difference lets you fix things most people cannot.
  • Reality testing — The ability to tell apart what you actually observed, what you concluded, what you predicted, and what you felt. Most of us reach the conclusion we wanted and build the reasoning afterwards. Catching yourself doing it is what makes your judgment worth trusting.
The academy

You arrive wanting something to change. You leave with capabilities that last the rest of your life.

The courses are named for what is actually going on in your life, because that is what people arrive with. What you build inside them carries into everything else.

Most people know which one is theirs the moment they read it.

Do Your Best Work

For anyone whose work matters to them.

The distance between what you are capable of and what you actually produce is rarely just skill. It is the human capabilities you have built, and the specific things getting in your way — which are not the same as anyone else's.

Understand What Is Running You

Underneath every course is the same body of work: ego literacy, the fourth rung of the ladder.

Most of what you do is decided before you decide anything. The fears you learned early, the beliefs you formed about what you are, and the strategies you built to protect yourself are still running — and they are shaping your work, your relationships and your choices right now.

When you can see them, you get to choose. That is where the capabilities in every course come from.

The community

The course has an end. The people you meet doing it do not.

Every serious network exists for the same reason: who you spend time around changes what you become. We are building one, and membership in it is the part that lasts longest.

Y Combinator, YPO, Vistage, EO — every one of them is worth more for who is in the room than for what is taught. Nobody has built one around who you are becoming.

Your cohort

Small, and matched deliberately. People at a comparable point in their lives, working on comparable things, chosen because they fit you and what you are trying to do.

What that changes. Everyone is applying this to a real life, so what gets said in the room is real. You watch the same capability play out in a marriage, a company, a family. You get years of other people's experience in months.

Who they are. Everyone here is going after a level of capability that most people never reach, and has committed real time and real money to getting there. That selects hard. You spend months in close company with people like that, working on the things that genuinely matter to them — and they with you.

Your coaches

A network of exceptional people, rather than one person for everything.

The coach who is right for how you lead is rarely the one you need for a relationship, a transition, or the business you build afterwards. You work with whoever fits what you are actually doing — and because they arrive already understanding how you operate, you get their best work from the first session rather than the fourth.

Access to people at this level has normally belonged to those who could assemble it for themselves. This is what it looks like built for everyone else.

And then the whole network

Your cohort is where it starts. Beyond it is everyone else — every cohort, every course, every country, before you and after you.

The course ends. Your membership does not. People stay for the network long after they have finished learning, because that is where the value settles.

Most networks connect people through what they do. This one connects them through who they are becoming.

How this is different

We built education the other way round.

Everything you have tried gave you one real piece of this.

  • Books — Knowledge, and access to the best thinking there is.
  • Therapy — Repair, and a real understanding of where something came from.
  • Retreats — Opening, and the experience of being genuinely different for a while.
  • Coaching — A person who sees you clearly and holds you to something.
  • Courses — Structure, and a path someone has thought through properly.

Each is one piece, and you are left to assemble them yourself — which book, which therapist, which retreat, in what order, applied to what. Almost nobody manages it, and it is nobody's fault. It has never existed as one thing.

Here is what one thing looks like.

  1. 01

    We learn who you are

Deeply, and with real precision — how you are built, what drives you, what you protect, and how you make sense of things.

  2. 02

We build the context of your life

Where you are right now. What you already understand and live. What you know intellectually but have not yet made real. What you have never encountered.

  3. 03

Your journey is generated for you

What you learn, in what order, at what depth, is built from who you are, where you are, and what you are trying to reach.

  4. 04

You are placed with people who fit you

A cohort chosen deliberately — comparable point, comparable ambition, people whose work will sharpen yours.

  5. 05

You are matched with the right coaches

Whoever fits what you are actually working on, arriving already understanding you.

  6. 06

You do it in your real life

The conversation, the decision, the relationship, the pattern. Your life is where it gets applied and where it gets proven.

  7. 07

    And it keeps adapting

Every time you apply something and something happens, the understanding of you updates — and what comes next changes with it.

What is underneath this

The deepest work on how people actually work, in one place.

None of these bodies of work is new. Bringing them together is.

  • Instruments for understanding a person

The most accurate available, obtained, tested and rebuilt over fifteen years.

  • The wisdom traditions

Millennia of direct investigation into how the mind constructs a self, and what is underneath it.

  • Trauma and healing

What happened to a person, and how it is still shaping what they do today.

  • Somatic practice

The body as the place where all of it is actually held.

  • Artificial intelligence

What finally makes it possible to bring all of this to one person, in their language, at their depth, at the moment it can change something.

  • Parts and inner-systems work

The competing selves inside one person, and how to work with them rather than fight them.

  • Adult development

That people do not only learn more. They change how they make sense of things, and that is a different kind of growth.

  • Neuroscience and cognitive science

How attention, memory, emotion and decision actually work in a human being.

  • Leadership and organisational development

Decades of pioneering work on how people carry responsibility and act under real pressure.

  • Entrepreneurship and building businesses

What it actually takes to build something, and what it asks of the person building it.

  • Communication and influence

How understanding travels between people, and why it so often does not.

  • Relationships and conflict

What holds people together, what breaks it, and what genuinely repairs it.

Each of these is a lifetime's work on its own. What has never happened is all of them, in one place, aimed at one person.

Which is why it can start by understanding you.

Most AI gives the same answer to a frightened twenty-two-year-old and a grieving sixty-year-old. What changes everything is a system that knows your history, what you are protecting, and what you are ready to hear today.

Who you are

How you are built. What actually drives you and the fear underneath it. How you make meaning, which decides what guidance can land with you right now. What happens when you get close to people. And what your life did to you, because so much of what runs you was formed by what happened rather than by who you are.

Where you are

What is actually going on in your life at this moment. What you already understand and apply. What you grasp intellectually but do not yet live. What you have misunderstood. What you have never encountered. And what you are ready for, uncertain about, or quietly resisting.

Underneath all of this is Morpheus, the hyper-personalization engine that does the understanding. It builds a picture of who you are and where you are, and everything else is generated from it. More than five years of development, validated across more than 1.5 million people. It keeps evolving as you do.

This could not have been built three years ago. Building an education around one person requires something that can hold a real understanding of that person and reason with it properly, every time. That capability arrived recently. It is why this exists now.

This is also how your cohort is chosen. Understanding you this precisely is what makes it possible to put you with the right people — the ones whose work will sharpen yours, and whose company will still matter to you years after the course ends.

In practice

You bring something real from your life. You work on it until something actually changes.

Something got under your skin. You reacted — sharper than you meant to, or colder, or you said the thing you cannot take back. You could see yourself doing it and could not stop. Afterwards came the regret, and then the weeks of dealing with what it cost.

You bring that here.

What comes back already understands what happens in you under this exact kind of pressure — what gets triggered, what you are protecting, and the shape your reaction takes when it does. So that is what it works on with you.

Then you work it through with your coach, who started out already understanding you. You come away knowing the mechanism, rather than the story you told yourself afterwards.

Two months later the same thing starts somewhere else entirely. This time there is a gap where there was not one before — because it remembers, and it knows you.

That is the unit of learning here: one real situation, worked all the way through.

Who is building this

Understanding humans deeply is one discipline. Building AI that can use that understanding is another.

Nick Connor, Founder

Nick Connor

Founder

Thirty years in human development, fifteen building AI. Trained in cognitive behavioural therapy and Jungian psychoanalysis. He has built the Sharmadá Foundation alongside his brother Patrick since 2010, through more than 120 retreats. He founded one of the earliest AI companies in the United States, and built Morpheus — the hyper-personalization engine underneath HumanIA that works out who each person is and what they specifically need.

More

Sharmadá is his brother Patrick Connor's teaching. Nick has built it with him from the beginning — sixteen years, more than 120 retreats, and continuing today in California, Mexico, Colombia and Spain. Much of what HumanIA teaches was tested there first, on real people, over years.

His teachers have been direct rather than literary. Adyashanti, Eckhart Tolle, Michael Singer, David Hawkins, Baba Hari Dass and Sri Swami Purna — retreats, individual work, and sitting with them personally over many years. Somatic work with the Newfield Network. Compassionate Inquiry with Gabor Maté. Internal Family Systems. Trauma and trauma healing, extensively. He still works with his own teacher every week.

Fifteen years of research into personality structure led him to obtain the systems behind every serious instrument in the field and test each one for predictive accuracy using machine learning. Almost none held up across the full range of human personality. The one that did became the foundation of the instrument he built with Katherine Chernick Fauvre, and developed considerably further from there.

He has deployed this work in leadership development with Microsoft, Google, DHL and major international banks.

Morpheus is the engine that makes the personalization possible: it builds and continuously updates an understanding of each person, and everything they receive is generated from it. More than five years of development, validated across more than 1.5 million people.
